1GOAL for blind footballers

Paralympic footballer Lee Greatbatch recently visited Sightsavers-supported Akropong School for the Blind in Ghana, as part of our work for 1GOAL: Education for All.

The next Alex Ferguson

Having developed his blind football skills at St Vincent’s Residential School for the Blind in Liverpool, Lee has already played for Great Britain at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 and has high hopes of starring at the 2010 World Blind Football Championship and the 2012 games in London.
A free-scoring striker, Lee can also turn his hand to coaching, so whilst his beloved Stoke City continue to menace defences across the Premiership, Lee took time out of his busy training schedule to teach the children of Akropong School for the Blind a trick or two, and help enhance their football skills.

The impact of missing out on basic education

‘No education or poor education limits individual capacity, the effects of which are magnified when extended through family, community, and country. Education determines the prospects of people and countries. Evidence is compelling that, while not sufficient by itself, education is a prerequisite for economic development, individual health and well-being, democracy, and poverty alleviation. Basic education, which encompasses early childhood development through early secondary school, is considered an antidote to the spread of both HIV/AIDS and abusive child labour. Studies link education to higher agricultural productivity, longer life expectancy rates, lower infant mortality rates, and greater political stability and tolerance. Education empowers people and gives them a stake in society.’ [1]

The impact of missing out on basic education - Children's stories

I’m Mahder. I’m 12 and I love running, playing volleyball and watching Ethiopian Pop Idol. My dad was a tailor. He died a few years ago. When he was alive I went to school and always had enough to eat. I was so sad when he died. I went to school for a month and then the money ran out and I had to stop going. When my friends went to school, I would cry all day. I didn’t do much apart from look at old school books and help mum. I felt frustrated and angry. Mum has to work day and night just so we can survive. She has many jobs. She sorts beans at the coffee board, carries heavy bricks at the construction site and sometimes works as a cleaner. She’s often tired. My little brother Nathaniel, who’s 6, is very sick. I help Mum look after him. It makes me upset when we clean his sores because he’s in pain. He’s too ill to go to school, so I’m teaching him to read and write. It makes me angry that not all children in Ethiopia get the chance to go to school.

One day for 1GOAL

We are asking everyone to don the shirt of their favourite footy team for the day to show your support for this campaign in the colours of the one you love (football team that is).
Strut about at work (ignoring the taunts of your colleagues), or lounge around watching the box in it, impress your partner on a date in it - whatever takes your fancy. You could even play football in it if you like.
All we ask is that you GET A PHOTO OF YOU IN THE SHIRT AND UPLOAD IT HERE to show your solidarity!
Plus, throughout May 11, UPDATE YOUR FACEBOOK STATUS WITH THE NAME OF YOUR FAVOURITE TEAM - it'll get people talking, we guarantee it.
Find out more, and pledge YOUR support at: http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/1GOAL?fb
