1GOAL WORLDWIDE

In the next two days, behind closed doors, leaders from the world's largest economies (the G20) will meet in South Korea to discuss the issues that affect our shared planet. They say their mission is to get the world on track for economic recovery and a better future for all. Yet the G20 are closing their eyes to the world’s poorest people and nations most at risk.

About masters and teachers - Paulo Coelho

In one of his Family Conversations,
Confucius sets down an interesting dialogue on
the subject of learning.
Confucius sat down to rest, and his
students immediately started asking him
questions. On that day, he was in a good mood
and so decided to answer. Someone asked him:
'You are capable of explaining everything
you feel. Why don't you go to the Emperor and
talk to him?'
'The Emperor himself makes beautiful
speeches,' said Confucius, 'but beautiful
speeches are merely a question of technique,
they do not of themselves contain Virtue.'
'Well, send him your book of poems, then.'
39
'Those three hundred poems could be
summed up in two words: think correctly. That
is the secret.'
'What does thinking correctly involve?'
'It's knowing how to use mind and heart,
discipline and emotion. When we want
something, life will guide us there, but by
unexpected paths. We often feel confused
because we are surprised by those paths and
think we must be going in the wrong direction.
That is why I said, allow yourself to be carried
away by emotion, but have enough discipline to
follow it through.'
'Is that what you do?'
'When I was fifteen, I began to learn. When
I was thirty, I knew what I wanted. When I was
forty, my doubts resurfaced. When I was fifty, I
discovered that Heaven has a plan for me and
for each man on the face of the Earth. When I
was sixty, I understood that plan and found the
serenity to follow it. Now that I'm seventy, I
can listen to my heart, but without letting it
distract me from the path.'
'So what makes you different from other
men who have also accepted the will of
Heaven?'
'I try to share it with you. And anyone
wanting to discuss an ancient truth with a new
generation has to use his capacity to teach. That
is my one quality, being a good teacher.'
'And what is a good teacher?'
'Someone who questions everything he
teaches. Old ideas cannot enslave a man,
because they change and take on new forms. So
let us use the philosophical riches of the past,
but without forgetting the challenges that the
present world sets before us.'
'And what is a good student?'
'Someone who listens to what I say, but
adapts my teachings to his life and never follows
them blindly. Someone who looks not just for
employment, but for a job that brings him
dignity. Someone who does not seek to be
noticed, but to do something notable.'

The slayer of dragons By Paulo Coelho

Zhuangzi, the famous Chinese writer, tells
the story of Zhu Pingman, who went in search
of a teacher in order to learn the best way to
slay dragons.
The teacher trained Pingman for ten whole
years, until he had honed to perfection the most
sophisticated dragon-slaying techniques.
Pingman spent the rest of his life looking
for dragons in order show off his skills: to his
great disappointment, he never found a single
dragon.
The writer of the story comments: 'We all
prepare ourselves to slay dragons, but end up
instead being devoured by the ants of the details
that we never bothered to look at.'

среда, 15 сентября 2010 г.

Let's choose our future

Nthabiseng
Hello from South Africa! My name is Nthabiseng Tshabalala and I'm 12 years old, and go to Winnie Ngwekazi Primary School in Soweto, South Africa. It has been a huge honor to work on this issue with all of you. Education has changed my life, and I want every child around the world to have the same chance.
During the World Cup, I had the incredible chance to work with Shakira and 1GOAL. Together, we delivered Education Yellow cards from 1GOAL supporters to world leaders who were meeting here in South Africa.
I thought that meeting was big. But next week, all the leaders in the world are meeting at the United Nations to discuss how to deal with issues like education. So this week I’m travelling with the 1GOAL Campaign to New York City! At the summit, I will talk to world leaders, tell them my story, and ask them to make sure every child has a chance to get an education.
I also know they will listen much more closely if they are hearing from many people at once. So now I am asking you to join me. www.join1goal.org/r/chooseourfuture

Shakira YouTube Interview about 1GOAL

Shakira voiced her support for 1GOAL and discussed the importance of education in achieving peace and global security during a wide-ranging interview with YouTube as part of their YouTube Interviews series. Shakira answered questions about her music and the World Cup, but focused mostly on her support for education and how her childhood in Colombia impacted her commitment to education campaigning.

2500 questions were submitted by YouTube viewers and voted on by 40,000 people. The top voted questions were posed to the songstress during the 30 minute interview. Shakira spent the majority of the interview discussing her support for 1GOAL and her own organisation TheBarefoot Foundation.

In response to the question, "What motivated you to join 1GOAL?" Shakira explained that a traumatic childhood experience informed her views on the importance of education. Shakira's father lost his business when she was 8 causing her family to lose their car and to sell their furniture to pay the debt, prompting her realisation that she needed education to succeed in life. She commented "I am convinced that education is the tool that will unlock every kids' talent and potential...and I am convinced that education is the best deal for everyone; for the rich countries and the poor countries. When we invest in kids talent and potential we are securing a safer world."

Luis from Nashville asked how people can get more involved with 1GOAL. In response, Shakira asks supporters to join 1GOAL so their "Voice can be heard" and explains that their messages and opinions will be presented to world leaders who meet at the Education Summit on July 11th. The interview has had over a million views in 2 days making it the the most watched in the series, which kicked off by interviewing President Obama in February.

Mick Jagger Joins 1GOAL!

Mick Jagger, lead singer of The Rolling Stones, announced today that he was adding his world-famous voice to the 1GOAL: Education for All campaign – joining a growing list of local and international stars from the entertainment world.

Jagger signed up to the 1GOAL campaign after talking to children participating in 1GOAL and the Qatar FA’s Education at your Feet project in Johannesburg – and discovering that 72 million children around the world are denied an education.

Jagger said : “I am honoured to support 1GOAL. I love football and to raise awareness that 72 million children are denied an education through this global sport is truly amazing.  I want to urge you – even if you are not a football fan like me – to sign up to this campaign and help leave a legacy from this World Cup - to get every child into school."

1GOAL is aiming to give all these children the chance of a different, brighter future. Millions of people around the world have already signed up – along with hundreds of famous figures from the worlds of football, entertainment and politics.

1GOAL for blind footballers

Paralympic footballer Lee Greatbatch recently visited Sightsavers-supported Akropong School for the Blind in Ghana, as part of our work for 1GOAL: Education for All.

The next Alex Ferguson

Having developed his blind football skills at St Vincent’s Residential School for the Blind in Liverpool, Lee has already played for Great Britain at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 and has high hopes of starring at the 2010 World Blind Football Championship and the 2012 games in London.
A free-scoring striker, Lee can also turn his hand to coaching, so whilst his beloved Stoke City continue to menace defences across the Premiership, Lee took time out of his busy training schedule to teach the children of Akropong School for the Blind a trick or two, and help enhance their football skills.

The impact of missing out on basic education

‘No education or poor education limits individual capacity, the effects of which are magnified when extended through family, community, and country. Education determines the prospects of people and countries. Evidence is compelling that, while not sufficient by itself, education is a prerequisite for economic development, individual health and well-being, democracy, and poverty alleviation. Basic education, which encompasses early childhood development through early secondary school, is considered an antidote to the spread of both HIV/AIDS and abusive child labour. Studies link education to higher agricultural productivity, longer life expectancy rates, lower infant mortality rates, and greater political stability and tolerance. Education empowers people and gives them a stake in society.’ [1]

The impact of missing out on basic education - Children's stories

I’m Mahder. I’m 12 and I love running, playing volleyball and watching Ethiopian Pop Idol. My dad was a tailor. He died a few years ago. When he was alive I went to school and always had enough to eat. I was so sad when he died. I went to school for a month and then the money ran out and I had to stop going. When my friends went to school, I would cry all day. I didn’t do much apart from look at old school books and help mum. I felt frustrated and angry. Mum has to work day and night just so we can survive. She has many jobs. She sorts beans at the coffee board, carries heavy bricks at the construction site and sometimes works as a cleaner. She’s often tired. My little brother Nathaniel, who’s 6, is very sick. I help Mum look after him. It makes me upset when we clean his sores because he’s in pain. He’s too ill to go to school, so I’m teaching him to read and write. It makes me angry that not all children in Ethiopia get the chance to go to school.
